Question 1

What is a firm mattress?

Accepted Answer

A firm mattress is a mattress with a supportive surface that keeps you sleeping more on top of the bed than in it. On the common 1 to 10 firmness scale, firm models typically fall around a 7 or 8, with only a thin comfort layer over a coil or dense foam support core. The result is minimal sinkage and a flatter, more stable sleep surface.

Question 2

What is the difference between a firm and a medium firm mattress?

Accepted Answer

The difference is how much the surface gives: a firm mattress usually rates about a 7 or 8 out of 10 and lets you sink very little, while a medium firm mattress sits closer to a 5 to 7 and adds more cushioning at the shoulders and hips. Medium firm suits a wider range of sleepers, and firm is the better fit if you want a distinctly solid feel.

Question 3

Who should sleep on a firm mattress?

Accepted Answer

Back sleepers and stomach sleepers usually do best on a firm mattress, since a flatter surface helps keep the hips from dropping below the shoulders. Heavier sleepers often prefer firm models as well, because more of their weight is carried by the support core rather than the comfort layer. Side sleepers generally want more give at the shoulder and hip, so medium or plush tends to suit them better.

Question 4

Is a firm mattress better for back pain?

Accepted Answer

A firm mattress is not automatically better for back pain, since it suits some sleepers with back discomfort and creates too much surface pressure for others. What matters most is spinal alignment: the bed should support your spine in a fairly neutral line without pushing back at your shoulders and hips. Sleep position and body weight both change which firmness does that best.

Question 5

Does a firm mattress soften over time?

Accepted Answer

A firm mattress usually softens a little during its break-in period, which is typically the first 30 to 60 nights of regular use as the comfort layers respond to your body. It will not cross into another firmness level, so a firm bed does not become a plush one. If you want more cushioning after that, a mattress topper is the usual way to adjust the feel.

Question 6

How do I know if a firm mattress is right for me?

Accepted Answer

The most reliable way to know is to lie on a firm mattress in your usual sleep position for several minutes and see whether your spine stays neutral and your shoulders and hips feel supported rather than pressured. At Sleep Outfitters, the bedMATCH diagnostic system measures your body and sleep posture in store and suggests the comfort levels that match your results. Comparing that recommendation against how a few firm models actually feel is a good way to narrow the choice.
