Question 1

What is an extra firm mattress?

Accepted Answer

An extra firm mattress is the firmest comfort level most retailers carry, typically rating about an 8 to 10 on the 1 to 10 firmness scale. It has a very thin comfort layer over a dense, high-support core, so you rest almost entirely on top of the surface. Sinkage is minimal and the sleep surface stays flat and taut.

Question 2

What is the difference between a firm and an extra firm mattress?

Accepted Answer

An extra firm mattress keeps a slimmer comfort layer above the support core than a firm mattress does. A firm model usually rates around a 7 or 8 on the 1 to 10 scale and keeps a modest comfort layer, while extra firm moves up to roughly an 8 to 10 with very little give at the surface. Both are built for support, and extra firm simply holds the flattest, most stable surface of the two.

Question 3

Who should sleep on an extra firm mattress?

Accepted Answer

Stomach sleepers and heavier back sleepers are the most common fit for an extra firm mattress, since a flat, taut surface keeps the hips from dropping out of line. People who simply prefer the traditional feel of a very solid bed often choose extra firm as well. Side sleepers rarely find it comfortable, because the shoulder and hip have almost nothing to sink into.

Question 4

Is an extra firm mattress good for back pain?

Accepted Answer

An extra firm mattress is not the usual first choice for back discomfort, since medium firm is more commonly recommended. Very firm surfaces can concentrate pressure at the shoulders, hips, and lower back for some sleepers, while others find the added support helpful. Stomach sleepers and heavier sleepers are the groups most likely to be comfortable at this firmness.

Question 5

Can you make an extra firm mattress feel softer?

Accepted Answer

You can make an extra firm mattress feel softer by adding a plush mattress topper, typically two to four inches of memory foam or latex over the surface. Most mattresses also soften slightly during their break-in period. A topper will not change the firmness rating of the mattress itself, so it is worth confirming that the base firmness is close to what you want before buying.

Question 6

How long does an extra firm mattress take to break in?

Accepted Answer

An extra firm mattress usually needs about 30 to 60 nights of regular use before it settles into its long-term feel. During that period the quilting and thin comfort layer relax slightly, and your body also adjusts to a surface that contours very little. If it still feels wrong after a couple of months, the firmness level is probably the mismatch rather than an incomplete break-in.
