Question 1

What are the main types of beds?

Accepted Answer

Beds are usually grouped by construction and style: panel beds with a headboard and footboard, platform beds with a built-in slat deck, upholstered beds wrapped in fabric, storage beds with drawers in the base, and space-saving options such as daybeds and bunk beds. Adjustable beds are a separate category, built on a motorized base that raises the head and feet.

Question 2

What is the difference between a bed and a bed frame?

Accepted Answer

In most stores a bed means the complete piece of furniture, usually a frame together with a headboard and often a footboard, while a bed frame on its own is the rails and supports that carry the mattress. Buying a bed gets you the finished look in one purchase. Buying a frame on its own usually costs less and makes sense if you already have a headboard or do not want one.

Question 3

Does a bed come with a mattress?

Accepted Answer

Beds are almost always sold without a mattress. The bed covers the frame, headboard, and any footboard or rails, while the mattress and its support are chosen and priced separately so you can pick the feel you want. Read the product details before ordering, since some beds include slats or a deck and others do not.

Question 4

Do I need a box spring with a bed?

Accepted Answer

Whether a bed needs a box spring comes down to its style rather than its size. Platform beds, storage beds, and most upholstered beds include a slat deck, so the mattress goes straight on. Panel and sleigh beds often have only side rails and cleats, which means a box spring or foundation has to sit inside the frame to hold the mattress.

Question 5

How do I choose the right bed?

Accepted Answer

Choose a bed by starting with the mattress size the sleepers need, then checking that size against the room. A queen bed generally works well in a bedroom at least 10 feet by 10 feet, while a 10-foot by 12-foot room leaves more comfortable space for nightstands and walking room. From there, decide on height, storage, and whether you want a headboard and footboard.

Question 6

Do beds come assembled?

Accepted Answer

Most beds arrive unassembled or partly assembled, with the headboard, footboard, side rails, and slats packed flat and put together in the bedroom. Assembly generally takes basic hand tools and about half an hour to an hour with two people. Measure doorways, stairwells, and tight corners ahead of delivery, since a fully built bed rarely fits through them.
