Question 1

What is a mattress topper?

Accepted Answer

A mattress topper is a removable layer, usually 2 to 4 inches thick, that sits on top of the mattress and under the fitted sheet to change how the bed feels. Toppers are made from memory foam, latex, wool, down or down alternative, and foam with gel or copper infusions. They are a way to make a mattress softer or firmer without replacing it.

Question 2

What is the difference between a mattress topper and a mattress pad?

Accepted Answer

A mattress topper is thick enough to change the feel of the bed, typically 2 inches or more, while a mattress pad is a thin quilted layer, often under an inch, that adds a light cushion and a bit of protection. Pads usually have elastic corners like a fitted sheet; toppers often sit loose or use straps. A protector is different again and is there only to keep the mattress clean.

Question 3

Can a mattress topper fix a sagging mattress?

Accepted Answer

A mattress topper can mask a mild dip, but it cannot fix a sagging mattress. The topper follows the shape of the surface underneath, so a sag of an inch or more will still be there once you lie down, and a soft topper may make it more noticeable. If the support layers have broken down or the mattress is well past its useful life, a topper is a short-term patch rather than a repair.

Question 4

How thick should a mattress topper be?

Accepted Answer

Most mattress toppers are 2 to 4 inches thick, and the right thickness depends on how much you want the feel to change. A 2-inch topper adds a modest layer of cushioning and works well on a bed that feels slightly firmer than you want, while 3 to 4 inches noticeably softens the surface. Remember that a thicker topper raises the height of the bed and may require deep-pocket sheets.

Question 5

What is the best mattress topper for hot sleepers?

Accepted Answer

The best mattress topper for hot sleepers is one with an open structure or a cooling treatment, since a dense foam layer sitting directly under the body is where heat tends to build. Latex and wool breathe well on their own, and gel- or phase-change-treated memory foam is designed to draw warmth away from the surface. Solid, untreated memory foam is generally the warmest choice.

Question 6

How do I care for a mattress topper?

Accepted Answer

Most mattress toppers are spot cleaned rather than machine washed, because foam and latex can tear or hold water. Vacuum the surface, treat spots with mild soap and water, and let the topper dry completely before putting sheets back on; a removable cover, if it has one, can usually be washed. With regular use a topper typically lasts about three to five years before it flattens.
