Question 1

What is a box spring?

Accepted Answer

A box spring is a supportive base made of a wood frame with steel coils or a spring grid inside, wrapped in fabric, that sits between the mattress and the bed frame. The springs absorb part of the load and shock coming from the mattress above, which is why box springs were originally paired with innerspring beds.

Question 2

Do I need a box spring?

Accepted Answer

You need a box spring mainly if you have an innerspring mattress and a bed frame with open rails and nothing else to hold the mattress up. Foam, latex, and hybrid mattresses generally do better on a flat foundation or a platform bed, because a box spring flexes and can let those beds dip over time.

Question 3

What is the difference between a box spring and a foundation?

Accepted Answer

A box spring has springs inside that give slightly under weight, and a foundation does not. That flex adds a little cushioning beneath an innerspring mattress, but it works against foam and hybrid beds, which are built to rest on a rigid surface. That is why most newer mattresses list a foundation or a platform rather than a box spring.

Question 4

What is a low profile box spring?

Accepted Answer

A low profile box spring is a shorter box spring, typically about 5 inches tall rather than the standard 8 or 9 inches. It provides the same coil support while bringing the whole bed closer to the floor, which suits thick mattresses, shorter headboards, and smaller bedrooms where a tall bed feels out of scale.

Question 5

When should I replace a box spring?

Accepted Answer

A box spring generally needs replacing about every eight to ten years, or sooner if it sags, creaks, or has a rail or spring you can feel through the mattress. Set it on the floor and look at it from the side, since a sound one should still be flat and square. Many people replace it at the same time as the mattress so both parts are the same age.

Question 6

Does a box spring go on the floor or in a bed frame?

Accepted Answer

A box spring is designed to sit inside or on top of a bed frame, which keeps it off the floor and lets air move underneath. It can be used directly on the floor if needed, though that limits airflow and leaves the edges unprotected. If you use a metal rail frame, make sure it has enough center support for the size of the bed.
