Question 1

What size bedding do I need for a dorm?

Accepted Answer

Most dorm bedding needs to be twin XL, since the majority of college residence halls use twin XL beds rather than standard twins. A twin XL mattress typically measures about 38 by 80 inches, the same width as a twin but roughly five inches longer. Check your school's housing pages before you shop, because some buildings still use standard twin or full beds.

Question 2

Will regular twin sheets fit a dorm bed?

Accepted Answer

Usually not, because a standard twin fitted sheet is cut for a mattress about 75 inches long while most dorm beds are twin XL at about 80 inches. A twin sheet tends to pull off the corners or not reach them at all. Flat sheets, comforters, and blankets are more forgiving since they only need to drape, but fitted sheets and mattress protectors have to be twin XL.

Question 3

What bedding should I bring to college?

Accepted Answer

A practical dorm bedding list is two sets of twin XL sheets, a mattress protector, a comforter or duvet, one or two pillows with cases, and a lightweight blanket. Two sheet sets means one is always usable while the other is in the laundry. Many students also bring a mattress topper, a laundry bag, and an extra pillow for sitting up in bed to read or study.

Question 4

Do I need a topper for a dorm mattress?

Accepted Answer

A topper is optional, but many students add one because dorm mattresses are built to be durable and firm rather than plush. A two to three inch twin XL topper is the common choice, and it can soften the surface or add a more breathable layer in a room without air conditioning. If you are unsure, wait until move-in, sleep on the bed a few nights, and order one once you know how it feels.

Question 5

Should I use a mattress protector on a dorm bed?

Accepted Answer

A mattress protector is worth using on a dorm bed, both for hygiene on a mattress other students have slept on and to keep spills off a mattress you do not own. Choose a twin XL protector, and pick one deep enough for the mattress plus a topper if you plan to use one. A machine-washable protector is much easier to keep up with in a shared laundry room.
