Question 1

What is a mattress foundation?

Accepted Answer

A mattress foundation is a flat, supportive base that sits under the mattress and holds it level, usually built from a wood or metal frame covered in fabric. Unlike a coil box spring, most foundations use rigid slats or a solid deck, which gives foam and hybrid mattresses the even support they are designed for.

Question 2

What is the difference between a foundation and a box spring?

Accepted Answer

The difference is what is inside: a mattress foundation supports the bed with closely spaced slats or a solid platform, while a box spring contains steel coils or a spring grid that flexes under load. Because a foundation does not compress, it holds foam and hybrid mattresses flat, and it is the support type most current mattresses are built around.

Question 3

Do I need a foundation for my mattress?

Accepted Answer

You need a mattress foundation any time your bed frame does not already provide a solid, evenly spaced surface. Simple metal rail frames and open frames have nothing for the mattress to rest on, so a foundation fills that role. A platform bed with slats spaced roughly three inches apart or less usually supports the mattress on its own.

Question 4

What is a low profile foundation?

Accepted Answer

A low profile foundation is a shorter version of a standard mattress foundation, typically around 5 inches tall instead of about 8 or 9 inches. It supports the mattress the same way but keeps the overall bed height lower, which helps with thick mattresses, with shorter headboards, or for anyone who prefers an easier step in and out of bed.

Question 5

Can a foundation be used with any mattress?

Accepted Answer

Most mattress foundations work with foam, latex, and hybrid mattresses, since those are built to rest on a flat, non-flexing surface. Innerspring mattresses can sit on a foundation as well, though some older models are still designed around a box spring. Check the mattress manufacturer's support requirements before pairing the two, because the wrong base can change how the mattress wears.

Question 6

How do I choose the right mattress foundation?

Accepted Answer

Choose a mattress foundation by matching the size to your mattress, then deciding on height and whether you want a one-piece or split design. Split foundations come in two halves, which makes them much easier to carry through tight stairways and doorways. If you plan to use a headboard, measure the finished bed height first so the mattress ends up where you want it.
