Question 1

What is a futon?

Accepted Answer

A futon is a piece of furniture that works as both a couch and a bed, made up of a folding frame and a mattress that sits on top of it. The frame folds upright so the mattress forms a seat and backrest, and folds flat so the same mattress becomes a sleeping surface. The name comes from the Japanese word for a bed laid on the floor, though the frame-and-mattress version is what most stores sell.

Question 2

What is the difference between a futon and a sofa bed?

Accepted Answer

A futon uses a separate mattress resting on a folding frame, while a sofa bed has an upholstered body with a mattress folded inside that pulls out on a metal mechanism. Converting a futon is usually a single motion, and its mattress can be replaced on its own later. A sofa bed looks more like a standard couch when closed, with a sleeping surface that is built in rather than separate.

Question 3

What futon frame styles are available?

Accepted Answer

Futon frames come mainly as bifold frames, which fold across the middle so the mattress bends in half, and lounger or trifold styles, which add a reclining or extended position. Frames are typically built from hardwood, metal, or a combination of the two, and some add arms, storage, or a matching ottoman. Chair and loveseat widths exist for small rooms, and most lines top out at a queen width.

Question 4

What sizes do futons come in?

Accepted Answer

Futons are commonly sold in chair, loveseat, twin, full, and queen widths, with full and queen the most common for a piece meant to be slept on regularly. A full futon typically opens to about 54 by 75 inches and a queen to about 60 by 80 inches, matching standard full and queen mattress dimensions. Measure the wall space for the folded position and the floor space in front of it for the open position.

Question 5

Can you sleep on a futon every night?

Accepted Answer

You can sleep on a futon every night, though how comfortable that is depends heavily on the mattress and the frame. A thicker mattress with a foam or innerspring core, on a sturdy frame with closely spaced slats, holds up much better under nightly use than a thin cotton-filled mattress on a light frame. If the futon will be a primary bed rather than a guest bed, prioritize mattress thickness and frame construction.

Question 6

How long does a futon last?

Accepted Answer

A futon frame typically lasts several years, and often longer if it is hardwood or heavy-gauge metal and is not folded and unfolded daily. The mattress is generally the part replaced first, since it does the folding, and foam and hybrid fills hold their shape longer than all-cotton ones. Tightening the frame hardware occasionally and rotating the mattress helps both parts last.
