Question 1

What size are crib sheets?

Accepted Answer

Crib sheets are fitted sheets sized for a standard full-size crib mattress, which typically measures about 27-1/4 inches by 51-5/8 inches. Packaging usually lists the sheet itself as roughly 28 by 52 inches. Because full-size crib mattresses cluster around one standard size, most crib sheets fit most full-size cribs, but mini and portable cribs need sheets made for those smaller mattresses.

Question 2

What is the best material for crib sheets?

Accepted Answer

Cotton is the most common material for crib sheets, in weaves such as percale, jersey knit, and muslin. Percale is crisp and breathable, jersey is soft and stretchy so it is easy to pull on and off, and muslin is lightweight and tends to soften with each wash. Whatever the material, the sheet has to fit the mattress tightly, since a loose or oversized sheet is a safety issue rather than a comfort one.

Question 3

Are fitted crib sheets the only bedding that should go in a crib?

Accepted Answer

For an infant, a tight-fitting crib sheet on a firm, flat mattress is the only bedding that current safe-sleep guidance recommends. Pillows, blankets, quilts, comforters, crib bumpers, sleep positioners, and stuffed toys are all recommended against in an infant's sleep space. If you are concerned about warmth, a wearable blanket or sleep sack is the usual alternative to a loose blanket.

Question 4

How many crib sheets do I need?

Accepted Answer

Most parents keep three to five crib sheets on hand. That is generally enough to cover a middle-of-the-night change, one sheet in the wash, and a spare, since crib sheets get changed far more often than adult bedding because of leaks and spit-up. Keeping one or two folded within reach of the crib makes a late-night swap much faster.

Question 5

Do crib sheets fit a toddler bed?

Accepted Answer

Crib sheets usually do fit a toddler bed, because most toddler beds use the same standard crib mattress rather than a larger one. That is why so many are labeled for both crib and toddler use. Measure the mattress before you buy, though, since some toddler beds and convertible frames take a different size and will need their own sheets.

Question 6

How should crib sheets be washed?

Accepted Answer

Wash crib sheets before the first use, then launder them on the cycle and temperature the care label specifies. A warm or hot wash is common for a sheet that has been soiled, and a fragrance-free detergent is a frequent choice for infant bedding. Check the elastic and corners over time, and stop using a sheet once it has stretched out and no longer grips the mattress tightly.
