Spring brings growth, new beginnings, and, for many, deep cleaning. As you begin sprucing up your home, don’t forget where you spend most of your time: your bedroom. Follow the tips below to freshen up your space for the new season.
Start with your mattress
You’ve spent a long, cold winter snuggled up in bed. Your mattress should be the first place to begin the cleaning process. Start by removing all comforters, sheets, protectors, and bed skirts. Sprinkle baking soda over the entire mattress surface, drawing out dirt, dust mites, and moisture. Allow the baking soda to sit for a few hours, then use a vacuum to clean the remaining mixture from the surface.
For those who desire a deeper clean, make your bed and leave the baking soda on the mattress for an extended period. When it's time to rewash the sheets and mattress protector, strip the bed and vacuum up the baking soda and any dust or dirt that may have accumulated.
Linens are up next
The most efficient and effective way to clean your bedding is in the washing machine. It’s best to check any manufacturer tags on your linens before cleaning to ensure they aren’t dry-clean only. To wash your bed linens at home, place your washing machine on the warmest water setting the fabric will allow and the highest spin cycle. Once the cycle is complete, place your sheets in the dryer on a medium to low setting. Washing your linens together is the best practice, but if you need to mix in regular laundry, you can adjust the process above to fit a general load. Wash items like sheets at least once every week to reduce the presence of dust, oils, and other allergens.
Don’t forget your pillows
Clean your pillows at least every three to four months to keep them fresh and comfortable. Memory foam pillows are spot-clean only, but the covers are generally removable and washable. We recommend washing them in cold water with a mild detergent and then hanging to dry. This will refresh your pillows, remove stains, and eliminate lingering smells.
Nothing beats climbing into a freshly cleaned bed after a long day. By following these cleaning tips regularly, you’ll give your mattress the care it deserves and get the sleep you deserve. Happy spring cleaning!
